We have just spent another fantastic weekend surveying and collecting eDNA samples in St Ives Bay with some wonderful volunteers. This is the third year of collecting data and we are starting to understand the four distinct areas we are looking at. Each location has a different role within the ecosystem, from rich rocky reef habitats that serve as fish nurseries for numerous species, to sand and mud substrates that look desolate but have an incredible biodiversity.

On top of that we had a real treat on the journey back to Newquay Harbour when a huge pod (estimate around 80) of Common Dolphins joining hundreds of Gannets feeding on a bait ball, and then two Minke Whales joined the party.

🐙 A master of disguise in action.

Octopuses are among the most remarkable animals in the ocean, able to change both their colour and skin texture in an instant. As they move across the reef, they blend seamlessly with their surroundings to avoid predators, ambush prey, and conserve energy.

Octopuses play a vital role in healthy marine ecosystems. As intelligent mid-level predators, they help regulate populations of crabs, molluscs, and other invertebrates, maintaining the natural balance of reef communities. 

They are also an important food source for sharks, groupers, moray eels, and many other marine animals, making them a key link in the ocean food web.

🐙 A master of disguise in action.

Octopuses are among the most remarkable animals in the ocean, able to change both their colour and skin texture in an instant. As they move across the reef, they blend seamlessly with their surroundings to avoid predators, ambush prey, and conserve energy.

Octopuses play a vital role in healthy marine ecosystems. As intelligent mid-level predators, they help regulate populations of crabs, molluscs, and other invertebrates, maintaining the natural balance of reef communities. 

They are also an important food source for sharks, groupers, moray eels, and many other marine animals, making them a key link in the ocean food web.
