Just One Ocean Ambassador Tiger Tyson managed to grab a podium place at the 2023 Formula Kite European Championships. David Jones, Just One Ocean CEO and founder, caught up with him briefly this afternoon before Tiger got swept away by well-wishers and media people.
Keep your eyes on @tiger___tyson because he aims to represent his country, Antigua and Barbuda, at the 2024 Olympics. Next stop, Santiago Chile for the 2023 Pan American Games Olympics qualifier.
Congratulations Tiger, well done!

Citizen scientists at work on a warm and sunny day in September. The Big Microplastic Survey is a great citizen science project that can easily be planned as a company event. Team building while collecting scientific data on a local beach #winning.
Thank you Resource Futures for the photos and the scientific contribution!

Today is International Day for the Conservation of the Mangrove Ecosystem.
Mangroves are amazing ecosystems located on the boundaries between land and sea in the (sub)tropical regions. They sustain coastal communities and livelihoods, support a rich biodiversity and provides habitat for thousands of species as well as nurseries and spawning grounds for fish and crustaceans. Mangroves also protect coastlines from storm surges, tsunamis, erosion and rising sea levels and play a role in climate mitigation by being effective carbon sinks taking up five times more carbon than terrestrial forests.

Kelp is a large brown algae or seaweed that grows in cool (between 6 and 14 degrees Celsius), relatively shallow oceans waters close to the shore. Kelps grow in dense groupings forming large forests canopies and beds underwater. They forests provide food and shelter for thousands of species of fish, invertebrates, and marine mammals. Kelp forests are among the most productive and dynamic ecosystems on the planet #kelpisamazing.

Wonderful survey photos from Spanish Banks, Vancouver, Canada. What a beautiful view!
Please send us your images from around the world. It is wonderful to see the variety of places where citizen scientists carry out the Big Microplastic Survey. The amount of data collected by so many is invaluable for our understanding of the microplastic problem on our beaches and riverbanks.

In the natural world it is all about symbiosis!
The pilot shrimp and the prawn goby have a symbiotic relationship. This means they are dependent on each other and both benefit from the relationship (mutualism).
In this case the pilot shrimp builds and maintains the sandy burrow that both animals live in. When they are outside of the burrow the goby, having better eyesight than the shrimp which is nearly blind, is responsible for watching out for danger. The fish will rest its tail fin against the shrimp's antennae. When it senses danger, it will flick its fin and the shrimp and goby will both retreat back to the safety of the burrow. Teamwork!
