The baobab tree is an icon of the African continent. Baobab trees are native to the continent, inhabiting low-lying, arid regions from the savannahs to the coasts.
Nicknamed "The Tree of Life", a mature baobab creates its own ecosystem. It helps to keep soil conditions humid, promotes nutrient recycling, and prevents soil erosion. Animals eat its fruits and seeds and birds nest in its branches. Across Africa, many people eat most parts of the baobab—including roots and small sprouts.

The Pacific grey whale is one of the animal kingdom's great migrators. This baleen whale migrates between feeding and breeding grounds. They travel in pods spending the summer in Alaska and the winter in the warmer, shallower waters off the Mexican coast. This is where mothers give birth and nurse their calves, one calf at a time.
Today, Pacific grey whales are protected by international organizations and several governments. Mexico transformed some of Baja California’s breeding and nursing lagoons into a protected refuge zone.

This is how pretty mangroves can be when you peek under the surface.
Feather duster worms (sabellidae) are a family of marine tube worms. They have a crown of multicoloured, fan-shaped tentacles that are extended from the tube for feeding and breathing. They will quickly be retracted at the first sign of danger. The feather duster worms in this photo were not at all fazed by the photographer’s presence!
