On Half Moon Caye, red-footed booby chicks are hatching—fluffy, wide-eyed, and growing into the sleek seabirds that soar across the open ocean. As part of Belize’s first marine protected area, Half Moon Caye shelters one of the largest red-footed booby colonies in the Western Hemisphere. Gentoo Penguins: Super Parents of the Antarctic! 🐧 Gentoo penguins are not just the fastest swimmers of the penguin world—they’re also dedicated parents! After their chicks hatch, mom and dad take turns feeding them by regurgitating a mix of krill, fish, and squid straight into their tiny beaks. This rich diet helps the chicks grow fast, preparing them for life in the icy waters. For the first few weeks, chicks stay cozy under their parents’ protection, but as they grow, they form "crèches" (penguin daycare groups) for safety while the parents hunt. By around 8-10 weeks, they’re ready to explore the ocean on their own! Co-parenting for the win!
