In 2009 there were reports about a huge floating island of plastic in the Pacific Ocean. At that time, very few people were talking about it, but enough people were aware that the conversation and the research could begin. Less than 10 years later, there are now hundreds of movements around the world trying to resolve the marine plastic pollution. Public engagement is essential is we are going to protect and conserve the oceans because as Dr Sylvia Earle said, “You can’t care if you don’t know.”
