Gentoo penguins can make as many as 450 dives (!) a day foraging for food. They are also amazing freedivers and can remain underwater for up to 7 minutes. Gentoo penguins can swim up to 22 miles an hour, faster than any other diving bird!

These amazing marine birds are listed least concern on the IUCN Red List with population sizes large and stable. Good news for the Gentoo's!

We love when people send us their Big Microplastic Survey photos! This survey was done on Limekilns Beach in Fife. Very little plastic was found and that’s a good thing! It all adds to a global map of data that is being collected and helps to show the scale and distribution of microplastics in the world.

If you want to get involved and become a citizen scientist, register on the website: microplasticsurvey.org.

Octopuses are amazing marine creatures. Some astounding facts include:

Octopuses have three hearts and blue blood.

Octopuses are masters of camouflage. They can completely change their skin color and texture in under a second.

When under attack an octopus can detach an arm and let it crawl off on its own! They can then regrow the missing limb.

Octopuses live fast and die young. Males die a few months after mating. Females give their lives to protect their eggs but die shortly after they hatch.

They’re smart enough to use tools! Octopuses in captivity have been observed to solve puzzles, open jars, navigate obstacle courses, and even find ingenious ways to escape their tanks.
