“The first five years have so much do to with how the next 80 turn out”

Congratulations Tops Day Nursery Havant on achieving Plastic Free Schools status.

“After meeting David Jones I realized that despite my love of the ocean, we had inadvertently been causing a huge amount of damage to the environment.  David corrected my misconceptions in a gentle and pragmatic way so I could start to make the changes without beating myself up, and at a rate that we could handle.  I now work everyday to bring about a more sustainable culture.  It’s often not black and white though, so I continue to go to David for advice and encouragement.”

Bamboo toothbrushes at Tops

Since 1990, Tops Day Nurseries has provided flexible, quality child care. They have a number of nurseries and each one prides itself in offering a happy, safe and secure environment where children can thrive.  However, founder and CEO, Cheryl Hadland is also an environmentalist and has concerns about many of the non-sustainable activities that are now common place around the UK and in the rest of the world.

MP for Salisbury visits Tops day nursery

We provided Cheryl and Tops with sustainability advice and consultancy on tackling their concerns regarding plastic.  As a result, the nursery chain has gone from strength to strength, becoming the most environmentally conscious and sustainable nursery chain in the UK.  They received world wide recognition for taking a stand on plastic glitter, introduced reusable aprons and various forms of recycling, returned to hand washing rather than plastic gloves, introduced bamboo toothbrushes and have recently banned wet wipes from all of their sites.  Cheryl’s passion and the changes her company have made have been incredible and we are proud to have played a part in that.

Tops Day Nurseries are a great model of how an organisation can make sustainable changes to their behaviour that results in a contribution to protecting the environment and particularly the oceans.  We are delighted to have played a part in their journey and look forward to working alongside them in the future.

If you have a similar organisation and would like to know how you can make changes, please get in touch.
