It has been great to be working alongside researchers and students from the University of Portsmouth recently who are conducting research into the incredible kelp habitats that can be found around the Isle of Wight. Kelp is a large brown algae or seaweed that grows in cool (between 6 and 14 degrees Celsius), relatively shallow oceans waters close to the shore. Kelps grow in dense groupings forming large forests canopies and beds underwater. They forests provide food and shelter for thousands of species of fish, invertebrates, and marine mammals. Kelp forests are among the most productive and dynamic ecosystems on the planet. We still have lots of filming to do as part of a collaboration between University of Portsmouth and Natural England and will let you know when it is all finished
